Throughout the year, the Lanier Library presents a variety of educational and entertaining programs that are all free of charge and open to the public. Here is a list of what will be happening during the spring months.
Tuesday, Feb. 21, noon.  Brown Bag Lunch program:  Tryon author David Cudlip will discuss his novels “Comprador,” “Gun of God” and “A Movable Verdict.”
March 14-17.  Spring book sale.
Tuesday, March 20, noon. Brown Bag Lunch program:  James Stehlik, a resident of Glassy Mountain, S.C. will talk about his book of local history, “Distilling the Mysteries of Hogback Mountain.”
Sunday, April 14, 2 p.m. Presentation of awards to winners of the 2012 Sidney Lanier Poetry Competition by the competition’s judges, the North Carolina Poet Laureate Cathy Smith Bowers and John Lane, an award-winning poet and writer of nonfiction from South Carolina. The competition is open to poets from North and South Carolina, and Feb. 15 is the deadline for entries to be mailed.
Tuesday, April 17, noon. Brown Bag Lunch program: Aliene Shields will appear in costume as she reads letters from her ancestor and discusses this local family in her book, “The Legacy of a Common Civil War Soldier — Private Thomas Marion Shields.”
Tuesday, May 15, noon. Brown Bag Lunch program to be determined.
Sunday, May 20, 2 p.m. A performance by the Scottish music group North Sea Gas. This concert will take place at the Tryon Fine Arts Center with a reception to follow at the Lanier Library.

The Lanier Library, at the corner of Chestnut Street and Melrose Avenue in Tryon, is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m.
