One Scoop at a Time workers began filling waffle cones and cups with heaping scoops of ice cream just over a month ago in Tryon.

The shop, owned by Tryon resident Khlid Aboudas, opened Thursday, Aug. 4.

“Tryon didn’t have [an ice cream shop], so I thought it was a good opportunity,” Aboudas said. “So far business is good.”

Aboudas previously owned and operated the Triangle Stop in Tryon before selling it earlier this year. He said he felt an ice cream shop would be a good fit in the small two-story building just down from the main street area of Tryon, especially seeing as Tryon was one of the only towns around that didn’t have its own ice cream spot.

Aboudas keeps eight flavors available each day but rotates them out on regular basis so there is always something new for ice cream lovers to enjoy. Flavors include standard favorites such as butter pecan, mint chocolate chip and strawberry. Plus, Aboudas throws a few wildcards in from time to time, including his favorite – sherbet – and others like birthday cake ice cream.

Hours of operation for the shop are Sunday through Thursday from 1 – 9 p.m. The shop stays open until 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Beyond ice cream, One Scoop also serves slushies, smoothies and milkshakes. Aboudas said in the next month he anticipates adding fresh doughnuts, coffee and cappuccinos.

He said people could also rent out the upstairs of the space for birthday parties and get-togethers. The space holds up to 20 people. He said the shop could even make the cake for the party.
