The Carolina Foothills Beekeepers welcome world honey champion Virginia Webb as a special guest speaker this month. Webb will share her thoughts and experiences with marketing products from the hive; honey, beeswax and propolis.
She will also have several live demonstrations on making items from beeswax.
The meeting is at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 16 at the Pine Crest Inn Conference Center.
Webb is a third generation beekeeper.
She began her journey in 1964 when she received a beehive as a birthday gift from her father.
Webb went on to become the first state winner in Tennessee 4-H for beekeeping and was also a Tennessee State Honey Queen. In 1993, Webb was named Georgia Beekeeper of the Year.
Webb and her husband Carl Webb, a charter member of the Russian Queen Breeders Association, now manage over 400 colonies of bees in North Georgia and Western North Carolina.
In 2005, the Webbs attended the first ever World Honey Show held in Dublin, Ireland.
With 21 different countries represented and competing against 400 entries from different countries, their Appalachian Sourwood Honey won top prize of “Best Honey in the World.”
Four years later at the World Honey Show in Montpellier, France, the Webb’s honey again won the gold medal for “Best Honey in the World.”
They are the only beekeepers to win this award twice.
