Bowers, Hart discuss works at Brown Bag Lunch May 17

Attendees at Lanier Library’s Brown Bag Lunch on May 17 will get a double treat when North Carolina Poet Laureate Cathy Smith Bowers and Lane Hart, associate professor of environmental studies at Wofford College, collaborate to discuss their latest works.

Bowers is no stranger to Lanier Library. She has judged the Sidney Lanier Poetry competition since its inception in 2009 and presented awards to the winners of the competition. She is a native North Carolinian and has published several books of poetry including “The Love That Ended Yesterday in Texas,” “Traveling in Time of Danger” and “A Book of Minutes.” She teaches writing at Queens University in Charlotte and has won numerous awards for her poetry, which as appeared in “The Atlantic Monthly,” “The Georgia Review,” “The Southern Review” and “Shenandoah,” among other journals.

Lane, poet and essayist, is no stranger to Lanier Library either. He presented a recent Brown Bag Lunch program to discuss his book, “Circling Home.” His writings on nature and the environment have been published widely. Most recently, he and creative writing colleague, Deno Trakes, developed a series of courses called “Cornbread & Sushi,” exploring the changing rural South through contemporary literature.
