Madeleine Chew Miner

Madeleine Chew Miner, 80, peacefully passed away on April 9, 2011 at the Hospice House of the Carolina Foothills, Landrum.
She was born on July 16, 1929 in Geneva, N.Y., and was the daughter of Beverly Chew and Margaret Scranton Smith Chew and the step-daughter of Edith Johnson Chew. She was predeceased by her husband, Dewitt Clinton Miner Jr., of 61 years.
An explorer of life, always one step ahead of her era, with a passion for the outdoors, she was an accomplished horsewoman, artist, amateur archaeologist and caring mother. She was a founding and life member of the Carolina Carriage Club, member of the Greenville County Hounds (S.C.), the Tryon Hounds (N.C.), the Genesee Valley Hounds (N.Y.) and the Old Tryon Foot Beagles (N.C.). In additional, she was instrumental in developing the Western New York Horse Shows, as well as being involved with the Muscular Dystrophy Association in Rochester, N.Y., in activities development.
She attended the Columbia School in Rochester and was a graduate of the Ogontz School in Philadelphia, Penn. During her lifetime she studied at the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, developing her talent for portraiture and lapidary skills. She also studied with the late Maurice Potter, ASW, an accomplished artist in landscape.
She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Woodbridge Miner of Palm Beach, Fla., her son, Dewitt C. Miner III, and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Fisher Miner of Landrum.
