St. Luke’s Hospital announces two professionals have joined the board of trustees. Warren Carson, Jr. and Marion McMillan begin their three-year term this month.

“We consider it quite a coup that we were able to attract such talent to our board. Their success and business acumen will benefit not only this hospital, but the community we serve,” said Susan McHugh, chair of the hospital’s board of trustees.

An English professor and the associate vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of SC Upstate, Carson is a member of the Modern Language Association, the College Language Association, NAACP and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. He lives in Tryon and enjoys reading, youth programs and community development.

“Warren is going to be a strong asset to the board,” said McHugh. “I’ve known him personally for 20 years, and I know firsthand of his sense of community and commitment to serve. His knowledge combined with his drive and experience will be invaluable.”

McMillan brings to the board a background in fundraising. He served as founding chair of the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System Foundation where he helped to raise more than $3.3 million. In 1994, McMillan was named the Upstate Philanthropist of the Year by the National Society of Fundraising Executives.

A member of the Economics Executive Advisory Council at the University of South Carolina-Upstate, McMillan also served as former chair of the School of Business Administration at USC-U where the annual top academic award is named in his honor.

Currently, McMillan sits on the St. Luke’s Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees and the Tryon Fine Arts Center Board. A retired stockbroker with Smith Barney, McMillan lives in Tryon with his wife, JoAnn, where they enjoy antiques, fishing and reading.

“We are pleased to have Marion join St. Luke’s Board of Trustees,” said St. Luke’s CEO Ken Shull. “He has been an active volunteer serving on our foundation board, and now our hospital too, will benefit from his knowledge and experience.

“St. Luke’s is extremely fortunate to have the support and commitment of a strong board. I look forward to Marion and Warren joining our current trustees as we all work to secure the hospital’s future and ensure we meet the healthcare needs of community,” Shull said.

“We’d also like to express our appreciation for the time and commitment of Dr. Hobart Rogers, Clark Benson and Tina Durbin who are no longer serving as board members,” Shull added.
