Frank ‘Boat’ Williams

Frank “Boat” Tracy Williams, 104, formerly of E. Lakeshore Drive, died Feb. 5, 2011 at Hospice House of the Carolina Foothills. He was the son of the late David Boyce and Anna Short Williams and husband of the late Virginia Barrett Williams.

He was born in Waco, N.C., and grew up in Cherryville, N.C. During “The Great Depression” he moved to Spartanburg seeking work with his wife and son, Leon Williams. Frank was a car mechanic, as well as a car and boat salesman. He and his family started two car and boat dealerships. Since 1930 the family introduced power boats to several states. He was a former self-taught airplane pilot. A member of First Baptist Church of Tryon since 1933 and a Sunday school teacher for many years. In his later years his was an ordained minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

He is survived by a granddaughter, Donna Lynn Manning, and five great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Edward Leon Williams, and a grandson, Edward Leon Williams Jr.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7 at Petty Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8 at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, conducted by Rev. Jeff Harris.
