Tryon Arts and Crafts School will host a Beginning Silversmithing weekend workshop with instructor Dan Haga on Saturday, Feb. 26 and Sunday, Feb. 27 at the craft school located on Harmon Field Road. This is an opportunity for students to begin their education and explore techniques in silversmithing with a renowned silversmith and artist.

Jewelry by Dan Haga

After being introduced to the medium, instructor Dan Haga from Charlotte, N.C., became so fascinated with silversmithing that he sold his insurance business in 1995 to take on the jewelry trade full time. Haga is well known and respected throughout the country and especially in the southeast for the quality of his craft and his ability to teach. His vast knowledge of the medium has led him to successfully instruct numerous workshops at a variety of schools that include the William Holland Lapidary School in Young Harris, Ga., and the Wild Acres Retreat in Spruce Pine, N.C.

During this workshop, students will learn the basic skills of silversmithing, tools involved and use of the torch while creating several pieces of jewelry. Other skills involved may include sawing, polishing, wire bending, making bezels and toggles, setting stones and using the flex shaft and paste solder. This workshop is open to students with no prior experience, but also serves as a good refresher course for more experienced students. Haga will provide new, more advanced projects for these continuing students.
