Published 2:23 pm Friday, January 21, 2011

The 10th Singing for the Soldiers event will be held at Sunny View Elementary School Friday, Jan. 28 at 7:30 p.m., featuring music from Mike Upright, the Green River Boys and the Soldiers for the Cross.

Organizers of the event ask those in attendance to bring items such as personal size snacks, toiletries, lip balm, stationery, black knit caps, batteries, beef jerkey, thermal underwear and other items to be shipped to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Monetary donations to purchase additional items and cover shipping costs will also be accepted.

The Singing for the Soldiers events began in 2008 and have collected thousands of pounds of items for the troops in different musical events in several Polk County venues.

The Jan. 28 event features Mike Upright, a top 20 southern gospel artist, whose current single, “The Great Physcians Hand,” was #18 on December’s national southern gospel charts. Also performing are two local bluegrass groups, the Green River Boys and the Soldiers for the Cross.

A hot dog supper sponsored by Big Level Baptist Church will be held in the Sunny View School cafeteria before the concert to benefit the same cause.
