Landrum took out its frustrations on Blacksburg Dec. 30 in the Battle at the Border Shootout. The Cardinals took two tough losses in the first two rounds and turned them into an 80-29 blowout against Blacksburg.
The Cardinals had an extra bounce in their step, attacking the basket, making good passes and playing with a mission. The frown that head coach Lyn Smith wore the first two days faded quickly after the complete domination of the region foe.
“I wished it counted towards region,” Smith said with a smile. “That’s the way Landrum basketball is supposed to play.”
The Cardinals were led by sophomore Truston Whiteside. Whiteside scored 11 in the first game and seven in the second round, but erupted for 19 to lead the Cardinals on Thursday morning.
“Our scorers looked to score instead of pass,” Smith said.
Defensively the Cardinals dominated allowing five points in the first quarter, six in the second and seven in the third quarter. Landrum will now began prepping for the heart of the region schedule.
