Polk County officials on Monday said the county may need to run its own tag office again.
Commissioners were considering creating new districts for fire service and the difficulty it may cause for the tax office.
Polk County Tax Collector Melissa Bowlin said that in 2013 vehicle taxes in North Carolina will be collected by the state when registration is done. Polk County Manager Ryan Whitson suggest that the board should consider opening its own tag office again at that time.
Polk County had its own tag office until several years ago when the state closed it. It was located where Scoops N More is located today in Columbus.
Currently Polk residents have to travel to nearby counties, such as Rutherford and Henderson to handle vehicle tag business.
The county briefly mentioned the state change of collecting vehicle taxes in 2013 during a meeting held Monday.
