Polk mens, womens track teams take gold

Polk County High School Wolverines mens and womens track teams swept the 43rd Annual Times News Invitational hosted at Polk County High on Saturday.
Host to the meet for several years, this marked the first time both Polk boys and girls took home the gold.
Polk County womens event winners:
Letoya Twitty (Long Jump and Triple Jump).
Amanda DeFisher (Pole Vault).
4×400 Meter Relay (Maggie Conner, Rebecca Elliott, Mary Kate Christiansen, Maggie Phipps).

John Spencer Wolfe (400 Meter, 800 Meter, 1600 Meter, anchor leg of 1st place 4×400).
Kayce Martin (110 Meter Hurdles).
4×400 Meter Relay (Wolfe, Andy Conner, Ethan Rhodes, Valentin Santos).
4×800 Meter Relay (Are Farstad, Cabell Brand, Andy Conner, Flynn Chapman).
Two Polk athletes earned this years Times News awards: Most Valuable Male Runner John Spencer Wolfe (Polk), Most Valuable Female Field Athlete Letoya Twitty (Polk).

Two athletes met the national silver standard signifying elite performances; Polks John Spencer Wolfe ran 4:21 in the Mens 1600 Meter Run and Chelsea Treadway of Swain County ran 2:18 in the Womens 800 Meter Dash.
True excitement surfaced in the add-on race of the day, the 4×100 Throwers Relay. Made up of only athletes from prospective teams who throw in the field events, it is always a spectator favorite. This one came down to a photo finish with Polks thrower team edging RS Central by the narrowest of margins. Polk ran 51.16 followed by Centrals 51.19 lean.
