The Polk Equine Emergency Rescue has received a second $10,000 grant from the Carol M. Wellman Revocable Trust, making it possible to purchase a much needed equine trailer/ambulance for Polk and surrounding counties, according to the rescue group’s president, Judith Donlan.
“We are extremely grateful to the Trust for their generosity and for being such a strong advocate for this community project,” says Donlan. “Our hope is the trailer will be delivered in time for the Steeplechase Races in April.”
The group’s board of directors and Donlan have worked to fulfill the dream of providing Polk and surrounding counties with this type of rescue vehicle.
“It has been a true labor of love”, says Judith.” “Naturally, we (PEER) hope equine and other large animal owners in and around Polk County never have to call us. Just in case, we are here for them 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.”
Donlan says the philosophy of the board of directors remains the same the best way to prepare for emergencies is to try to prevent them by being diligent with regard to farm and trailer safety.
Minimizing the risk of accidents and injuries should always be paramount. Transporting horses requiring critical care can be fatal if that care is delayed, says Donlan.
“We recommend making provisions for contacting the veterinarian and even a second veterinarian if yours is unavailable when an emergency occurs” says Donlan.
To reach PEER in an emergency please call the veterinarian FIRST, then call POLK COUNTY 911 and ask to have PEER dispatched to the emergency site.
