If you have a song to sing or a story to tell, Tryon Fine Arts Center has a class or workshop for you this spring. Registration is now open for two six-week classes and a one day workshop to be held at TFAC in April and May.

Children from five to seven have the opportunity to learn singing with local Gaye Johnson. Older students from eight to 18 can sing and dance with Greenville actress and educator Jenna Tamisiea. Adults and children have an opportunity to learn storytelling in a one-day workshop taught by storytelling artist and actress Rema Keen.

Johnson, of the nationally known musical duo Phil and Gaye Johnson, has just finished a class of sing-along songs and will start again for six weeks on Wednesday, April 14, at 3:45 p.m. Not only is Johnson an award winning musician, she is also a seasoned and gifted educator.

Laura Price, whose five year old daughter was in the class says, Kate had so much fun in her music class with Gaye. She was excited and looked forward to each Wednesday. We were impressed, not only with what Kate learned, but also with the way that Gaye was able to interact with a shy student and encourage her to participate.

Johnsons next six-week class Where Did That Song Come From, scheduled to begin on April 14, will focus on familiar songs. Singing together teaches rhythm, cooperation.

Professional singer, actress and theater educator Jenna Tamisiea will lead musical theater students to the next level as TFAC offers Musical Theater ABCs to students eight to 11,&bsp; and Broadway Disney Star!&bsp; to ages 12 and up.

Tamisiea, artistic director and director of education at Greenville Light Opera Works, has performed and taught with regional theaters across the South. Both classes will meet Wednesday afternoons at the Tryon Fine Arts Center.

The younger actor/singers will focus on learning how to use their bodies, imaginations and voices to become more confident performers onstage. As a group, the students will perform popular Broadway songs from favorites like Annie, The Sound of Music, The King and I and many more.

The older class will concentrate on building a character and communicating emotion. Students will sing older Disney favorites from The Little Mermaid and The Lion King to the newest hits from High School Musical and The Jonas Brothers. Parents and friends of both classes will enjoy a final project containing the songs from the best-loved musicals of all time.

Rema Keen, professional playwright, storyteller, actor and writer leads Story to Stage: Storytelling Workshop on Saturday, April 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.&bsp; Keen, a native of the mountains of Southwest Virginia, comes from a family of educators and storytellers. She has performed in a number of national and regional theatres including The Barter Theatre in historic Abingdon, Va.&bsp; Keen is currently a teaching artist with the South Carolina Arts Commission.
