Queen named recipient of Giordano Scholarship

The Admissions Department at the University of North Carolina at Asheville recently announced the 2010 recipient of the Frank & Sybil Giordano Scholarship.&bsp; Polk County High School Senior April Queen has been selected as the 2010 recipient. Queen is the granddaughter of Lydia Wilten of Mill Spring.

During her four years at PCHS Queen has had a very solid academic record. She has been involved in school activities such as PCHS Yearbook, indoor track, HOSA and the Humane Society.&bsp; The Polk County senior plans to major in education with an emphasis in Pre-Kindergarten teaching.

The Giordano Scholarship is available to Polk County seniors who reside in the county and have attended Polk County High School for at least three years.&bsp; Each applicant must meet some scholastic requirements and is interviewed by a local scholarship committee. The committee members are Judy Arledge, Frank Giordano, Richard Smith, John Vining and Tawana Weicker.

The Giordano Scholarship pays for all educational expenses for the freshman year at UNC-Asheville. The 2010 scholarship has an estimated value of $14,500.
