The Lady Wolverines pulled out a win in a close battle at rival Landrum on Thursday.
Polk County, now 6-2, entered the top of the seventh inning needing three runs to regain the lead and came up with exactly that. Polk then held Landrum scoreless in the bottom of the seventh to capture a 7-6 win.
The Lady Wolverines were in control early, scoring three runs in the first inning and padding the lead with another run in the second.
Polk County pitcher Yancy Pace, who got the win and improved to 2-0, held Landrum scoreless in the first two innings.
However, the Lady Cardinals found their offense after that point, scoring a run in each of the next three innings to pull within 4-3 after five innings.
Landrum moved into the lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Pace pitched three innings for Polk, allowing five hits and striking out three batters.
Polk finished with 13 hits, including two each from Alyssa Montgomery, Haley Champion and Nikki Williams. Both Montgomery and Champion also scored two runs.
Jordan Farmer pitched the entire game for the Lady Cardinals.
Despite giving up 13 hits and seven earned runs, Farmer showed good control, striking out eight Polk batters and allowing no walks.
Polk County is scheduled to play at Mitchell today. Landrum faced Woodruff yesterday. Results were not available at press time.
