TLT celebrates 61st season with ‘The Sound of Music’

The Tryon hills are alive with “The Sound of Music” for the next two weekends, as Tryon Little Theater brings the classic love story to the Tryon Fine Arts Center.
This Rodgers and Hammerstein musical is based on Maria Von Trapps memoir of the Trapp Family Singers, and since opening on Broadway in 1959, has enjoyed many revivals.
The 1965 Academy Award-winning movie starring Julie Andrews as the nun turned nanny, and Christopher Plummer as the widower with seven children, made many of its songs well-known standards, including the title song “The Sound of Music,” “Edelweiss,” “My Favorite Things,” “Climb Evry Mountain,” and “Do-Re-Mi.”
Directing TLTs production of “The Sound of Music” is Chris Tinkler, who has directed and starred in many shows in the area. Local favorites Patti Peake and Lavin Cuddihee star as Maria and the Captain, and there are over 40 other actors rounding out this TLT cast.
Mark Monaghan, an Inman resident and new to the TLT stage (but not to the stage), has a supporting comedic role as Max Detweiler, the concert promoter, with Suzie Kocher as the elegant Elsa Shraeder, a wealthy baroness.
“Theyre like Will and Grace on stage,” says Monaghan, “hysterically ego-centric, and loaded with money. Audiences of all ages will enjoy this family-friendly musical, and the Von Trapp children will win your hearts. For people who have never experienced live theater, this is an excellent introduction especially for children, and theater-goers may be surprised to see a performance as good as anything at the Peace Center, and at a fraction of the cost.”
Friday, February 19 is opening night, and thanks to this seasons sponsors there will be an opening night reception in the lobby following the show.
