Car hits body of man laying in road
A woman driving on Compton Bridge Road near Campobello early Sunday morning struck the body of a man who was already dead and laying in the road, according to the Spartanburg County coroner. The coroner identified the man as Thomas Smith Jr., and said the 49-year-old may have died from injuries sustained after falling on ice. S.C. Highway Patrol officials said the 35-year-old female driver was traveling about 20 miles per hour in a 45-mile-per-hour zone and tried to stop but could not avoid the man. Campobello Fire Chief Eddie McNeill said the woman was alone at the time of the accident and was very distraught. He said many people apparently walk down Compton Bridge Road to the Kangaroo gas station at the Highway 11 exit off I-26.
