Polk Countys John Spencer Wolfe has again qualified to run in the National Scholastic Indoor Nationals (NSIC).
He is ranked number one in the state in both the 1000 meter and the 1600meter races.
This year Polk has the added bonus of having a second qualifier. Bryan Lieberman has cleared 14 in the pole vault and is seeded number two in the entire State.
Polk Head Coach Alan Peoples has begun fundraising to insure that the opportunity to run at the Armory in New York is not missed.
John Wolfe was only the second athlete, and the first male, in the schools history to qualify for this honor. The first was Karen Godlock, who ran and won the Millrose Mile in NY in the early 1990s.
This is a chance in a lifetime for John, Bryan, and the school, says Peoples.
He estimates that the trip will cost about $2,500, and has already begun fundraising. This will cover the costs of entry fees, the runners, the coaches, the rental, the motels, fees, and food.
Peoples says they will rent an RV, drive to New York, and spend one or two nights in a motel. They will leave on March 12 and drive through until the 13th, then rest and get the runners ready to run.
The vault is on Saturday and Sunday, and Wolfe runs on Sunday. Polk will carry three coaches who are seasoned bus drivers and drive through both going and coming.
