Foothills Humane Society has provided low-cost spay/neuter programs to area residents for five years, fixing thousands of animals and reducing the number of homeless and abandoned animals in our area.
Foothills recently announced changes to its Spay/Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP) designed to make more effective use of its limited resources to assist residents unable to afford to spay or neuter their pets.
“Low cost services are available to anyone regardless of income thru specialized spay/neuter clinics in Spartanburg and Asheville, so that need is already being met,” according to Humane Society President Robert Then. “We are still not reaching many areas where most of our abandoned and unwanted animals come from, and we need to target our efforts and resources to those areas and owners to reduce the overpopulation problem as much as we can.”
This is a change from the prior program which provided highly subsidized, low-cost services to anyone regardless of income through the high volume clinic in Asheville.
Assistance under the new program will be targeted and available for low-income pet owners.
Income-qualified residents of Polk County, North Carolina, and Landrum, Campobello, and Gowansville in northern Spartanburg and Greenville Counties in South Carolina, can sign up for a limited number of surgeries provided by area veterinarians.
Proof of residency must be brought to the shelter to receive an Assistance Voucher for a $10 co-pay. Once they have received an Assistance Voucher, pet owners will make their own appointments at an assigned veterinary clinic.
Discount Forms will also be available for area residents who can afford the cost of surgery with some financial assistance, and will be accepted by several local veterinary clinics.
The Spay/Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP) is a major financial commitment aimed at reducing the heartbreak of homeless animals.
Area vets have donated services at reduced cost, and the surgeries are paid for by donors. Foothills Humane Society welcomes contributions to assist in this effort, which is vital to achieving the goal of “No More Homeless Pets”.
