Foothills gymnasts compete at Winthrop

Foothills Gynastic Academy ymnasts traveled to Rock Hill, S.C., for their first international competition. Savannah Robbins, Julianna Robbins, Sydney Waldman and Julia Skellie attended the Crown of the Carolinas on November 21 and 22 at Winthrop University.

Gymnasts from ten states and two countries – the U.S.A. and Barbados attended the competition.

First up, on Saturday, November 21, was level 6 gymnast, Julia Skellie. Julia is the daughter of David and Caroline Skellie of Landrum. She is 13 and attends Landrum Middle School.

Julia began on vault and scored a 8.85, winning 2nd place in the 13+ age division. Moving on to bars, Julia scored a point better, placing 2nd with a 7.8.

Next, the balance beam, Julias best event. With a costly fall, she scored a 7.725 and won 2nd place. Finally, on floor, Julia placed 2nd with an 8.925. In the all around, Julia won 1st place, scored a 33.325 in the 13+ age division and brought home five medals.

On Sunday, November 22, the level 4 gymnasts, Savannah, Julianna and Sydney competed level 4.

The Robbins sisters are the daughters of Arthur and Joy Robbins of Columbus. Savannah, age 11, attends Polk County Middle School and Julianna, age 8, attends Tryon Elementary. Sydney, age 7, is the daughter of Eathan and Renee Waldman of Tryon. Sydney attends Tryon Elementary as well.

Beginning on vault, Savannah scored a 9.025, placing 5th in the 11 age division. On bars she won 3rd with a 9.0. When Savannah moved onto the balance beam, which is only four inches wide, she placed 6th with an 8.35. Finally, on floor, Savannah scored an 8.65, earning 5th place. In the all around, Savannah won 4th place, scoring a 35.025.

Up next, was Julianna. On the vault, Julianna scored a 9.0, winning 4th place in the age 8 division. She placed 1st on the bars with a 9.125. Moving to the balance beam, Julianna scored a 9.1, also 1st place. On the floor exercise, she placed 1st with a 9.425. In the all around, Julianna won 1st place with a 36.65.

Sydney, also a level 4 gymnast who was competing for the first time this season, competed in the age 7 division. On the vault Sydney scored an 8.5 and won 8th place. On the bars Sydney spun to 7th place with an 8.6. Sydney scored a 7.175 on the balance beam and won 9th place. In the floor exercise she scored an 8.525 and placed 7th place. In the all around, Sydney won 9th with a 32.8. The level 4 team of Savannah, Julianna and Sydney won 6th place.
