Heavy rains causing drainage problems at Hwy. 108 roundabouts

Heavy rains have caused drainage problems at the roundabouts on Hwy. 108 in Columbus. One morning recently water draining into the roadway froze and caused some danger to drivers.
N.C. Department of Transportation (DOT) officials say that the planters in the centers of the roundabouts cannot hold the water, causing it to drain into the roadway.
The DOT is looking into the issue and says salt will be applied to the areas when temperatures drop below freezing.
The planters were there last winter, but no problems arose because the area was dry. This year the area has experienced high levels of rain and the dirt in the planters cannot hold the excess water.
