Jiggs Walker

Richard Goode Jiggs Walker, 80, of 1057 Capps Road in Tryon died Monday, December 7, 2009 in St. Lukes Hospital in Columbus.

Born in Landrum, S.C., he was the son of the late James O. Sr. and Edna Metcalf Walker. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Korea as a Staff Sergeant First Class. He was the manager of Cowans Meat Market for 32 years and later was self-employed with Walker Grading. Jiggs was the last surviving member of The Walker Brothers Bluegrass Band. He was a member of Morgan Chapel Baptist Church.

Surviving is his wife, Carol West Walker. Two sons, Larry Walker (Sherry) of Charlotte, N.C., and Jeff Walker (Donna) of Campobello. Three daughters, Janice Blackwell (David) of Green Creek, Tami Walker of Tryon, and Cindy Konieczny (Michael) of Boiling Springs, S.C. Three stepsons, Lamar Stribling of Saluda, Russell Stribling (Kelley) of Columbus,&bsp; and Robby Stribling of Boiling Springs, S.C. One brother, Charles Walker (Betty) of Union, S.C. Three sisters, Ruby Ravan, Patricia Tucker (Gene) and Linda Shehan (Allen), all of Landrum. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 9, 2009 in Morgan Chapel Baptist Church in Tryon, with Rev. Albert Teague, Rev. Bob Philbeck, and Rev. Tom Frady officiating.

Burial will be in Morgan Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery, with military rites by Polk County Memorial Burial Squad.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday prior to the service in the church.
