A solar energy company has expressed interest in installing solar panels on property owned by Polk County to generate and sell solar electrical power.

The Polk County Board of Commissioners Monday considered a non-binding letter of intent from Premier Power Renewable Energy, Inc./American Solar Integrators, but tabled the issue until the county attorney has reviewed the letter.

Premier Power Renewable Energy Inc./American Solar Integrators is interested in installing solar energy panels on three of Polk Countys four acres at the current transfer station in Mill spring. Polk County Manager Ryan Whitson said uses for the countys property are limited because it is a former landfill with a cap. He said the proposal could be a good use for the property.

Commissioners said they werent comfortable with the companys drafted letter of intent because it was too long and specific, so they drafted their own letter of intent, which could be approved next month. The countys letter basically says that the county will not negotiate with any other companies to utilize the property for the next 90 days. Commissioners said that the county manager is free to continue discussing and negotiating the idea with Premier Power Renewable Energy, Inc./American Solar Integrators.

If the solar energy project goes through, according to the company’s letter of intent, Premier Power would create solar power on Polks property and give Polk County 20 percent of the pro-forma value of the annual electricity generation. The company would likely sell its energy to a provider such as Duke Energy.
