Polk Central held a Day of Discovery on Thursday, November 5 on the schools campus. The students enjoyed many learning stations hosted by local scientists and other professionals, who provided information and demonstrations about numerous areas of science that included space, nature, agriculture, weights and measurements and car racing.

Exposing students to the many facets of science was the goal of the day and the outcome was that these students were excited to learn about the world of possibilities that science knowledge can provide. From a virtual tour of the galaxy, to holding turtles and studying their habitats to the science of car racing, students experienced a day of hands-on, real-world learning.

Groups and programs that provided the activities included: the Explorer Dome from KidSenses, the Asheville Arboretum, FENCE, NC Wildlife, Chimney Rock Park, Polk County High Schools FFA students, Edith Edwards (The Kudzu Lady), Mrs. Frizzle from the Scholastic Magic School Bus book series, the Pacolet Area Conservancy, Stotts Racings Dylan Stott, local beekeeper Ken Williams, Education Team ECCO, (Conservation and Commitment to the Oceans), and many more local and school volunteers.

Polk Central Elementary is a model school of science and strives to integrate scientific learning into all areas of the curriculum in order to better prepare its students for the 21st Century. The school also focuses on strong community ties in order to make students learning real world relevant and hands-on.
