An outstanding season for the Wolverines came to a close Friday night when they were edged 13-10 in overtime of their second round playoff game at Thomasville.

Polk County held its own throughout the defensive battle that left the two teams tied at 7-7 after four quarters of play. Both teams got their points in the first half and were unable to score again until overtime. The Wolverines struck first in the game on a 62-yard touchdown run by quarterback Andre Overholt late in the first quarter. The Bulldogs responded with a short touchdown pass with less than a minute left in the first half. Polk’s front line dominated play during much of the game, preventing Thomasville from getting any more good scoring opportunities in regulation.

In the extra period, Polk went ahead 10-7 on a 30-yard field by Jacob Christiansen. The Wolverine defense forced Thomasville into a fourth down situation and another potential tie if Thomasville kicked a field goal. But the Bulldogs, playing on their home field, decided to go for it on fourth and two from the two yard line, and they found they endzone and the win.

Polk County, which entered the game as the #5 seed in the west of the 2A playoffs, finishes the season with a co-conference championship and a record of 10-3. Thomasville, 9-4, the #4 seed, advances to play Lexington at home next week in the Sectional Round. Look for more coverage and pictures from the game in Tuesday’s Bulletin.
