Loss of son-in-law; fishing

This column is to keep you updated with fishing reports on our local lakes, rivers and other outdoor events in our area.
This week I lost my best fishing buddy ever, the best son-law and husband to my daughter, Brandon Horne. Brandon and I have fished for Bone fish in the Bahamas, Trout on the Davidson River, Muskie on the French Broad, Bass on his fathers pond in SC where we caught many fish, as well as catfish on Laughter Pond, and Bass, Muskie, Crappie and White Bass on Lake Adger. I have had nothing but respect and admiration for him. After Brandon came down with Hodgkins Lymphoma last February, he never had the chance to fish again. Complications left him in a wheel chair, but he was working hard at getting the use of his hands and arms back. On Monday, at the age of 25, he lost the battle, and died from Septic shock. So, the next time you are out fishing, make a cast for Brandon, because I will.
Fall fishing has remained strong with the continuation of warm weather. Crappie fishing is really going great with nice catches being reported in both lake Lure and Lake Adger. Lake Lure is still producing larger fish but smaller numbers than Adger. Bass fishing is also hot with some really nice fish being caught in private ponds on large minnows. Remember the fish want to add some weight before cold weather so we owe it to them to offer up some choice baits. Spinner baits fished on ledges and drop offs are great choices this time of year. Bream fishing also continues to be good along the shore line. Catch a few and try them for catching musky.
