A veteran is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to the United States of America, for an amount up to and including his life.

This anonymous tribute was read during the ceremony at Tryon Estates celebrating Veterans Day, when almost 300 residents gathered to commemorate the solemn occasion.

The program was highlighted by the procession of more than 90 veterans acompanied by their respective flags and service music. All six branches of the armed services were represented.

Paquito Dona of the Air National Guard and a member of the maintenance staff was the Grand Marshall of the ceremony; and the Cardinal Battalion of the Landrum High School AJROTC acted as the Honor Guard. Tryon Estates Chaplain Ralph Kuether presided at the podium.

Included in the program were inspirational readings and messages by residents and a memorial tribute to the 17 veterans from Tryon Estates who had died during the past year.

The celebration concluded with the playing of Taps, followed by a U.S.O.-type reception in the lobby.
