The Tryon Rotary Club has named Jean Pettigrew as an Honorary Rotarian. Pettigrew was a moving force in the establishment of an Interact Club at Polk Central.

President Zweig said that Mrs. Pettigrew epitomizes the basic tenant of International Rotary, Service Above Self. She and her late husband, Shaw, and children, Lane, Eric and Julie moved to Tryon in 1965 from Caracas, Venezuela. She is a graduate of Cornell University and has a Masters Degree from Converse College. She is chairman of the English Dept. at Polk Central High School and teaches students in the Gifted and Talented Program as well as Junior and Senior English. She has also taught in the Saluda School and in Tryon High School. In 1978 she founded and is co-president of the local AFS program.

Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Jolley of Mill Spring are parents of a son, Nicholas Wesley, born October 4 at Rutherford Hospital. He weighed 8 pounds, 5 ounces and was 21 inches long. The grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Jolley of Tryon and Mrs. Ruby Moffitt and the late J. C. Moffitt of Tryon. The great grandmothers are Mrs. Edith G., Moffitt of Horse Shoe; Mrs. Eva Jolley of Route 2, Columbus and Mrs. Giva Painter of Route 2, Tryon.

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Owens (Charlene) of Columbus are parents of a son, Ryan Thomas, born October 4 at Rutherford Hospital. Ryan has a sister, Caitlin, 22 months old. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Norris Owens of Chestnut Hill Farm, Melvin Hill. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Charles Tucker of Pea Ridge.

Jim and Tommy Johnson of Landrum, S. C. are parents of a daughter India Noel, born October 3 at Mary Black Memorial in Spartanburg. She weighed 7 pounds, 4 ounces.

Beth Child Parker, a Converse College graduate and recent winner in Internationals 12th Annual Young Musicians Auditions, will present a piano concert at her alma mater Friday at 8 p.m. The concert is a benefit for the scholarship fund set up in honor of her late teacher, Henry Rauch. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Child of Tryon.
