On Tuesday, October 27, the winners concert for the 2009 Sorel Choral composition contest was held at Carnegie Halls Zankel Hall.
Judith Cloud, the eldest daughter of Russell and Isabel (Inky) Cloud of Tryon, was awarded the first place prize for Anacreontics for chorus and guitar.
The jury of judges included Joan La Barbara, James Bassi, Marc-Antonio Consoli, Morton Subotnik and Julia Wolfe.
Ron Sadoff served as the non-voting chair. The awards ceremony was led by Elliot Forrest, Peabody Award-winning broadcaster and producer and Judy Cope, Executive Director of the Sorel Organization.
Through the Medallion program The Sorel organization intends to create opportunities for women in composition, conducting, piano, voice and film scoring. Their mission is to keep musical excellence alive and to help stretch the boundaries for women in music.
Cloud resides in Flagstaff, AZ where she is Coordinator of voice at Northern Arizona University.
