Tryon Arts & Crafts welcomes potter Yosuke Koizumi to its facility. Koizumi will be on location for a pottery demonstration on Wednesday, November 4, from 1 to 4 p.m.
Koizumi is a potter who has participated in countless trade shows in the ceramics industry, including the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts Conference, the National Art Education Association Convention, the Cambridge Pottery Festival, and the 1001 Pots Festival in Montreal.
Koizumi became a potter “by accident” during his college years at Tulane University where he began as a business major and later finished with a degree in ceramics. After graduating, Koizumi worked as an assistant to the ceramics professor at Tulane and sold his work in a number of galleries before returning home to Japan. It was in one of the oldest Japanese pottery villages, Shigaraki, where Koizumi studied ancient Japanese pottery and honed his skills.
Koizumi is currently employed by one of the largest pottery equipment manufacturer in the world, Shimpo Ceramics. During his time with Shimpo Ceramics he has executed thousands of pottery wheel-throwing demonstrations in about 15 different countries, and has helped hundreds of universities, high-schools and private studios build their facilities with professional, quality equipment while continuing to create and sell his unique and world-renowned pottery.
The event is open to the public and donations will be accepted at the door.
