Polk County two wins away from WHC title

Three quarters of the way through the regular season, the Wolverines are in position to battle for the Western Highlands Conference championship, and they control their own destiny. If they win the last two regular season games, they win the conference.

The Wolverines, 7-2 overall and 4-1 in conference, will try to take the first step toward that goal tonight when they travel to Owen, 5-4 overall and 3-2 in conference.

Polk is in a three-way tie for first with Hendersonville and Mountain Heritage after Owen last week upset Hendersonville 16-7.&bsp; The Warhorses prevailed in wet conditions on the road after forcing eight fumbles by Hendersonville, which lost four of them. Hendersonville was held to just 188 total yards.

Owen&squo;s Andy Coleman rushed for 75 yards and a TD and quarterback Kelab Fowler rushed for 74 yards and threw for 60.

Owen&squo;s two conference defeats came against Avery, 14-7, and Mountain Heritage, 44-7. Polk&squo;s only conference loss so far also came against Mountain Heritage, 27-7. &bsp;

Last week Polk County overpowered Thomas Jefferson for a 62-0 win, its third shutout of the season. Polk, which has a three-game winning streak, got touchdowns from seven players, including Landon Schlabach with three.

Polk&squo;s JV squad got a chance to take over in the second half and showed it was up to the challenge, outscoring Thomas Jefferson 6-0 over the final two quarters.
