The Polk County Wolverines beat the Landrum Cardinals Friday night in a hard hitting football game held at Cardinal Stadium in Landrum. One Cardinal was taken to the hospital, another Cardinal lost his helmet in a face mask call and a Wolverine was ejected from the game for a personal foul.Both sides of the stadium were packed with fans for the rival game across state lines.Many fans came equipped withh painted faces and bodies and flying hand painted flags pulling for one side or the other. The Cardinals got a quick lead with seven minutes to go in the first quarter when Austin Brown picked off a Wolverine pass near Polk&39;s 10-yard line for a quick touchdown and lead. Polk tied the game up just before the end of the first quarter on a Keenan Littlejohn touchdown run, and then took the lead in the second quarter with a touchdown pass from quarterback Dakota Turner to Justin Blackburn.Another second quarter Wolverine touchdown pass by Turner, this time to Ryan Thomas, put Polk up 21-7 going into halftime. Landrum gained on Polk&39;s lead in the third quarter with a short touchdown pass from quarterback Brandon Cannon to Cole McDowell, making the score 21-14. The game was lengthy due to many Polk penalties especially in the second half ranging from holding to personal fouls and a fourth quarter face mask, but Pollk overcame the setbacks to hold onto the one touchdown lead and improve to 3-1 on the season.
