White Oak Manor raised almost $2,600 in just four hours of a cookout last Friday for Adam Palmer, who was injured in a bombing recently in Iraq.

Palmer is recovering from critical injuries at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Reports are that Palmer will undergo another surgical procedure this week to repair his arm. Palmer&squo;s arm and leg were both fractured in the bombing. He also suffered shrapnel injuries all over his body.

Palmer&squo;s femur has been repaired, but he will have to stay off the leg for three months, friends of the family say.

Coworkers of Palmer&squo;s mother, Gale Palmer, an employee of White Oak Manor for 32 years, held the fundraiser for the family last Friday. Donations to help put on the event were made by coworkers, IGA, Tryon Estates and Elmo&squo;s Pub and Grill.

Staff Sergeant Palmer played football for Landrum High School and graduated in 2003. He has been in the Army for six years and was injured on his third tour in Iraq, just three months after his first daughter was born.

Palmer was injured on July 14 by an improvised explosive device (IED), a roadside bomb, and was first flown to a German hospital and then to Walter Reed in Washington, D.C. He was initially listed in critical condition and later in serious condition.

Another fundraiser is being planned in the next couple of weeks to be held at Elmo&squo;s in Tryon.

Donations for the family can be sent to the Tryon branch of Bank of America, which is handling donations for the family.
