At one point, Thompson fell into the river and the other man attempted to save him but was unsuccessful.

The other man drove the four-wheeler out of the woods to a Shady Lane home and called for help.

Officers responded to the call about the drowning around 11 p.m. that Sunday night.

The Polk County Sheriff&squo;s Office should receive preliminary autopsy results soon.

Thompson is survived by four children, 11 grandchildren, four sisters, a nephew, cousin, brother-in-law and many close friends.

A memorial service was held last week at the Saluda Mountain Jamboree.
