Recently the Polk County Extension Associates came together for a day of fun, food, fellowship and purpose.

The second annual craft day held on June 10 at the 4-H center and included several instructional workshops, including corn shuck angels, decorative gift bags, landscape weaving, and cool scarves.

One project, the &dquo;Cool Scarf&dquo; Project, was a community service project&bsp; and a labor of love. Cool scarves were assembled and will be sent to military personnel deployed to the Middle East. These scarves lower the body temperature by cooling the neck ‐ they feel like a cool, damp cloth that lasts for days.

Through evaporative cooling, they protect the wearer from the effects of extreme heat found in the deserts of the Middle East.

&dquo;This project made us feel good, by doing something for the men and women in the military services who protect our country,&uot; said Harriett Sams, extension associates and county council president, &dquo;This was truly a labor of love.&dquo;

The Cool Scarf Project is a project of the Soldiers&squo; Angel Organization. Soldiers&39; Angels is a volunteer-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with the mission of providing aid and comfort to the men and women of&bsp; the United States Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard and their families.
