Born in Topeka, Kansas, he was the son of Jane McKinney of Hendersonville. His sister Pat Rose also preceded him in death.

A U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, he retired from Vulcan Materials, where he had worked for 30 years. He was a member of Mud Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his daughter, Kerrie Verstrate, and a granddaughter, Grace Verstrate, both of Hendersonville; his uncle and aunt, Frank and Carol Erickson; his nephew, Brian Rose; several cousins; and many friends.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday in the Kirby Memorial Chapel of Shuler Funeral Home. Rev. Jerry Hyder will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service. Military honors will be rendered by the Hubert M. Smith American Legion Post 77, Hedrick-Rhodes Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5206, and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 14.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 120 Executive Park Bldg. 1, Asheville, N.C. 28801.
