On 7/02/09 Hughes passed away at 93 at Presbyterian Homes, Spring Park, Minn.

Hughes had one brother, Louis E. Zweig Jr., who is deceased. In 1927, Hughes and his family moved to St. Paul, Minn.

Hughes graduated from Harding High School and joined the Civilian Conservation Corps.

In 1938 Huhges met Lorraine Helen Daggy and three years later they were married. At Lorraine&squo;s death at age 91, Hughes and Lorraine had been married 66 years. Hughes and Lorraine have three children: Gary (Beverly), Tim and Rick (Ann); five grandchildren: Brian, Michelle, Sean , Erik and Keri; and four great-grandchildren: Benjamin, Hayley, Nathanael and Chase.

While working at U.S. Steel Supply Division for 43 years, Hughes also got a degree in accounting going to night school. In 1950, Hughes, Lorraine and family moved to Stillwater, Minn, where Hughes became a gentleman farmer while also working for U.S. Steel.

In 1955, Hughes took up golf. Hughes and Lorraine were avid golfers and over the years they were members of many country clubs and they even played golf in Scotland.

In 1980, Hughes retired from U.S. Steel as senior vice president of operations. Hughes and Lorraine moved to Tryon.

Hughes Mellon Zweig will be known for many good things, but most of all he was a great humanitarian. For most of his adult life he was a member of Rotary International. A former president of the Rotary Club of Tryon wrote, &dquo;Hughes Zweig personified what Rotary is all about ‐ Service Above Self.&dquo; Hughes was a president of the Rotary Club of Tryon and has a college scholarship named after him ‐ the Hughes Zweig Community College Scholarship.

Hughes was also a member of Habitat for Humanity.

Hughes and Lorraine will be interred in the Hazelwood Cemetery, Bayport, Minn., at a later date.
