John W. Spence

Mr. Spence was born April 9, 1924 in Lansing, Michigan; was a resident of Syracuse, N.Y., for many years; and retired to Tryon 20 years ago.

John had a gift for repairing things and devoted many hours to helping family, friends and his church. He loved his summer home on the St. Lawrence River.

Mr. Spence was an industrial/electrical engineer for GE and served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. He was a member of Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Tryon.

Mr. Spence was preceded in death by wives Virginia Garrett Spence in September, 2002; and Edith Gulbransen Spence in January, 1979.

Surviving are his dear friend June Franks; daughters, Elizabeth Harris and husband Tom of Syracuse, N.Y., Cynthia Kim and husband Tae of Centreville, Virginia; sister, Dorothy Adams of Pineville, N.C.; grandchildren, Garrett and Julia Kim; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday, July 1 in Tryon Estates, Tryon.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Carolina Foothills, 130 Forest Glen Drive, Columbus, N.C. 28722.
