Jean was born in 1929 in New York City and grew up in Leonardo, New Jersey. After completing a bachelor&squo;s degree in biology from the University of Tennessee, she returned to New Jersey, where she taught at the elementary and high school levels until her retirement in 1984. She was a devoted teacher and strong believer in the value of education.&bsp; Jean and her husband, Ken, moved to Tryon&bsp; in 1987, where she became very active in the community including the Tryon Swim Club, the Tryon Garden Club (especially Pearson&squo;s Falls), the Tryon Film Society, and volunteering at St. Luke&squo;s Hospital. She was also an enthusiastic traveler, bridge player, water colorist, and a voluminous reader. Her infectious laughter and independent spirit will be greatly missed by her family both here in the U.S. and in Scotland. &bsp;

It was her wish that memorial gifts be made to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, 130 Forest Glen Drive, Columbus N.C. 28722 or www.hocf.net.

A memorial service is planned for later in the summer.
