Hubert Charles Crater

Hubert was born on September 18, 1918, in Forsyth County, N.C., to Eugene Allen Crater and Elizabeth Faw Crater and was raised by his uncle, Charles Franklin Crater, and his aunt, Adie Elizabeth Davis Crater.

Hubert was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Nannie Frances Cumbo Crater, and his son, Jerry Gordon Crater.&bsp; He is survived by his grandsons, Jeffrey Gordon Crater and Michael Alan Crater, and his great-grandsons, Samuel Bruce Crater and Derek Michael Crater.

Hubert graduated from Lewisville High School, where he was state pole vault champion and on the state champion soccer team in 1936.&bsp; Hubert was a U.S. Navy combat veteran, serving in the Pacific during WW II. Hubert worked in textile manufacturing for many years at Tryon Processing and Carolina Yarn Processing. An avid golfer, Hubert was twice Tryon Country Club Champion, had six holes in one, and shot his age twice. Hubert loved his church family and taught Sunday School for over 40 years.

Memorial services will be held on Sunday, April 5, 2009 at 3 p.m. at Tryon United Methodist Church, 195 New Market Road, Tryon, N.C.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to Tryon United Methodist Church,
