Harmon Field Heritage Days this weekend bring back 1860 military life

Mingle with the soldiers at camp, ask questions, listen to their stories and share their campfires. If you are adventuresome, ask to fall in with them as they drill and learn alongside the troops as they are put through their paces. See what they typically carried into battle, including infantry, artillery, mounted and dismounted troops.

Come and enjoy the candlelight tour on Saturday night. Visit the camps after dark by candlelight and see the soldiers in camp doing their normal routines, letter writing, cleaning gear.&bsp; There might even be a skit or play to enjoy.

On Saturday, Heritage Days will open at 9 a.m. and close at 9 p.m. The activities for Saturday are as follows:&bsp; 10 a.m. ‐ Drill; 12 p.m. ‐ Wedding; 1:30 p.m. ‐ Battle; 3 p.m. ‐ Court Martial; 7 p.m. ‐ Candlelight Tour. Enjoy the candlelight tour on Saturday night.

On Saturday, Tryon Arts and Crafts will also be hosting an open house. Come and enjoy artisan demonstrations in weaving, pottery, lapidary, silversmithing, woodturning, and blacksmithing. Visit the heritage gallery and see the diverse traditional arts and crafts found in Tryon and the surrounding communities, as well as an exhibit of student work. Take time to browse through the gift shop and admire the many beautiful offerings, such as silver jewelry, silk scarves, woven shawls and blankets, stained glass and fused glass pieces, and much more. Light refreshments will be served.

On Sunday, Heritage Days will open at 9 a.m. and close at 4 p.m. The activities for Sunday are as follows:&bsp; 10 a.m. ‐ Drill; 12 p.m. ‐ Washer Woman Spy; 1:30 p.m. ‐ Battle.

In the Harmon Field Community Center, a Civil War Museum will be set up displaying various items from the Civil War, provided by local people whose ancestors were in the war. There will also be a quilt show by Landrum Quilters, including a quilt to be raffled.

Follow signs for parking. Bring a chair. There is no charge to attend this event thanks to the Kirby Civic Event Fund at the Polk County Community Foundation.
