Born in Georgia, he was the son of the late Walter Sumner and Ellen Eula Pittman Horne and Furman Dewitt Horne. He was a U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force veteran and of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by one son, James Sumner of Lancaster, N.H.; two daughters, Tracy Brey of Texas and Ellen Sumner of Gaffney; six grandchildren and one sister, Peggy Hammett of Campobello. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Wayne Linder.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 5, 2009 at Blakely Funeral Home.

Memorial services will immediately follow at 11 a.m in the Blakely Funeral Home Chapel, with Mr. Ashby Blakely officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Charles George VA Medical Center, 1100 Tunnel Road, Asheville, N.C. 28805.

The family will be at the home of Peggy Hammett, 1170 Hammett Road, Campobello, S.C. 29322.
