The Polk women advanced to the semifinals of the Western Highlands Conference Tournament by beating Madison on Monday night. But it was close.

The scoreboard read Madison, 61, Polk 60, with 6.9 seconds remaining in the game. Denise Edwards took an inbounds pass and drove upcourt. She spotted Kiki Miller open down low, delivered a pass her way, and Miller layed it in with one second left to give the Lady Wolverines the win.

Polk led 24-19 at the half, but the Lady Patriots fought back to tie the game at 49 with four minutes to go.

Kaitlin Franks tallied 20 points to lead Polk. Miller had 13 and Edwards had 11. Brooke Campbell scored five and Brandy McDowell added four.

The team will travel to Avery on Thursday.

Monday&squo;s win was much closer than the result of Polk&squo;s last game, a 76-60 rout of rival Hendersonville on Senior Night last Friday. Miller had a huge game with 20 points and 20 rebounds. Franks hit three 3-pointers and finished with 19 points, and Kayla Byrd had 11.
