By subbing out five players at a time, the Lady Wolverines are able to play relentless defense and push the ball in transition. Swain found that out firsthand Tuesday night as they were powerless for the first three quarters of play. A late surge made it interesting, but Polk was able to hang on for a 45-38 first-round playoff victory.

&dquo;I told (my players) that for the first three quarters, you could have filmed that, packaged it, and sold it as a defensive clinic,&dquo; Davis said after the game.

Swain struggled mightily against the press, managing only two free throws and no field goals in the first quarter.

Polk (14-10) had a 25-11 lead going into halftime, which they extended to 39-16 after three quarters.

Davis then called off the press, and the Lady Maroon Devils (11-15) went on a 19-2 run with some key three-pointers and free-throws. With about a minute left, though, Swain went cold and Polk knocked down four late free-throws to secure the win.

Kiki Miller led Polk with 15 points and 13 rebounds on the game. Denise Edwards had 12 points and three steals, and Kaitlin Byrd scored seven and had five steals. Toya Twitty grabbed nine boards.

Polk advanced to play at Hiwasee Dam (26-5) on Thursday night. Results were unavailable by press.
