Born Dec. 2, 1939 in Spartanburg, he was the son of the late Jesse Wilbur and Irene Lee Howell. He was in the construction business.

Survivors include his three sons, Joey Howell of Spartanburg, James Anderson Jr. of Campobello, Tim Howell of Spartanburg; a sister, Virginia Steadman of Boiling Springs; and a half-brother, Wildon McKaylop of Greenwood; 12 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and best friends, Bob House and Danny Hall. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Tabitha Lynn Howell.

Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16 at Heritage Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. David Bosler.
