He graduated from A.C. Moore School, Martinsville High and Washington & Lee University, where he was a member of the Alpha Order of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He graduated from Harvard Law School, where he was a member of the Chancery Club, the Southern Club and commodore of the Harvard Yachting Society.

He practiced law in Virginia, Baltimore, Md., and was a corporate lawyer for National Service Industries in Atlanta. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Atlanta, the Old War Horse Lawyers Club and the Georgia, Maryland and Virginia bars.

He is survived by his wife, Clara Carter; two daughters, Jane Carter and Sallie Carter DeVeaux; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be at noon Saturday at All Saints Anglican Church, 15 McDowell Road, Mills River. Memorials may be made to the church or to Saluda Fire & Rescue, Saluda, N.C. 28773.
