If you happen to be in the mood for a bit of adventure, you may be interested to know that the Asheville Contemporary Dance Theatre is offering up the fifth annual Asheville Fringe Arts Festival this weekend. Not for the faint of heart, this festival features edgy new material from some of the up and coming stars of the Asheville area. Performances will be in the BeBe Theatre and on the LaZoom Tour Bus this weekend Thursday through Sunday. However, you don&squo;t need to run up the freeway to enjoy intriguing visual art at the local galleries and the plethora of live music this weekend right here in Polk County. Tonight Warm up for the weekend in Saluda with witty singer songwriter Chuck Brodsky at The Purple Onion in Saluda at 7 p.m. &bsp;Down the hill in Tryon, Susan Bennett will be on piano at Lilac Wine at 7 p.m. &bsp; Friday Head over to Mill Spring for a concert with a purpose. Singing for the Soldiers at Sunny View Elementary features Michael Upright, Soldiers of the Cross, and Green River Boys at 7 p.m. Rather than charging admission, they are asking patrons to bring one or more items for soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan from the following list: black watch caps (toboggans), small containers of toothpaste, soap, deodorant, shaving cream, lotions, men&39;s and women&39;s underwear, razors, small towels, pajama pants, Long Johns, athletic socks. Bluegrass with The Green River Boys at Shaeffer&squo;s Grill starts at 6 p.m. Visit Lilac Wine to hear Brad Gee of Hendersonville playing the piano from 7-9 p.m. Fred Whiskin now dubbed the &dquo;jazz man of Tryon&dquo; will be at The Purple Onion from 7-9 p.m. this week, or catch him Saturdays and Wednesdays at Lilac Wine in Tryon. Elmo&squo;s Too welcomes the high energy classic rock of Weird Mojo with Mikey Van Dusen on drums and vocals, Tom Hearn on bass, the brilliant Steve Whiteside on guitar, and the powerful vocals of Susie Kocher. &bsp; Saturday Tryon Fine Arts Center winter classes start today with the Super Saturday Comedy Classic workshop for kids 8-18 led by Marianne Carruth. Other classes include Tap with Kathleen Carson on Mondays, Audition Support Group with a variety of directors on Mondays, and a casting call for middle school students to workshop with Marianne Carruth starting in February. The 10 a.m. performance is sold out, but there are still tickets available for the 1 p.m. show on January 28. This intriguing musical is based on the colorful book by Marcus Pfister. The sets and costumes take the audience underwater in a dazzlingly colorful show that teaches kindergarten through second graders valuable lessons about sharing true friendship with others.
