Hammett was born in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Jan. 31, 1927 and was the daughter of the late Paul Crutchfield and Bessie Wilkins. She was the widow of Wilbur Kiefer Hammett.

Ruth devoted her life to her family and to her church, Inman First Baptist Church. She was a faithful member and assistant teacher of the Faith Sunday School Class. She was a leader and worker in the Baptist Women and the Women&squo;s Missionary Union of the church for over 25 years. She also served with her husband in the Inman Lion&squo;s Club for many years and was very active as a member of the Women&squo;s Auxiliary of the American Legion Post 45 in Inman.

Survivors include three daughters, Patsy Hammett of Spartanburg, Paula Moore of Lake Lure, N.C., and Laura Hammett of Columbus; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A &dquo;Celebration of Life&dquo; service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009 at 3 p.m. at Inman First Baptist Church, with Dr. Paul Moore officiating.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the atrium area of the church. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Inman, S.C.

The family is at the home of a daughter, Patsy Hammett, 524 Poplar St., Spartanburg, S.C.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either Inman First Baptist Church, 14 N. Howard Street Inman, S.C. 29349, or Camp Lurecrest Ministries, Inc., 10800 Sikes Place, Suite 300, Charlotte, N.C. 28277.
