Celebrate the old &the new with creative community events

If you&squo;re looking for something to inspire you this week, why not stop in Simply Irresistible Gallery and discover the new glass mosaic work of Kathy Skomsky? Her funky fun art and furniture with images composed of cut tile, mirrors, and found objects can be both whimsical and serene. The Gallery is open 10-5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Tonight Step out of the house and away from the television for live music from Aaron Burdett at The Purple Onion in Saluda at 7 p.m. or Beth Thomas on piano at Lilac Wine in Tryon at 7 p.m. &bsp; Friday Stop by Lilac Wine to enjoy Luke Lichterman&squo;s wood sculpture lamps and hear Becky Oliver playing popular favorites at the piano from 7-9 p.m. Fred Whiskin is back tickling the ivories with Blues to Brubeck at The Purple Onion from 7-9 p.m. this week, or catch him Saturday at Lilac Wine in Tryon. If you feel like singing your favorite hits from across the pop charts, stop in at Elmo&squo;s for Karaoke, but the music will be live at Elmo&squo;s Too with The J&squo;s. &bsp; Saturday There are plenty of ways to put your idle hands to work this winter and get creative. For something to refresh your eyes, visit Bonnie Joy Bardos for Open Studio/Art House Saturdays at her house at 285 Greenville Street, Saluda beside the Saluda Inn from 11 a.m. ‐ 3 p.m. In Saluda Phil & Gaye Johnson will delight your ears at The Purple Onion or venture to Saluda Mountain Jamboree for dancing with the Kelly Road Band from 8-11 p.m. The joint will be jumping at Elmo&squo;s in Tryon with The J&squo;s. With band credits like Mad Tea Party, Firecracker Jazz Band, The Blue Rags, and Squirrel Nut Zippers these high energy musicians know how to get a crowd on their feet and dancing. Playing everything from Muddy Waters to AC/DC they will be rockin&squo; and rollin&squo; with 1998 International Blues Competition winner Abe Reid on harmonica and vocals, Jake Hollifield on keyboard, Mike Gray on drums, Henry Westmoreland on bass, and Jason Krekel tearing up the electric guitar. &bsp; Sunday FENCE gracefully starts 2009 with their Family Concert Series by welcoming harpist Deborah Brinson at 4 p.m. Red Dog & Winkie want to see you at the Elmo&squo;s Too Blues Jam at 4 p.m. These two musicians have been honing their chops and invite you to join them in trading licks. There&squo;s nothing like a jam to get those creative juices flowing. This is a family friendly event for musicians of all levels. For lighter fare catch Susan Bennett at Lilac Wine on the piano at 4 p.m. Meet old and new friends a the Old Time Community Dance at Stearns Gym hosted by the Congregational Church from 6-8:30 p.m. Caller Kerstin Haug will lead the dance with old tyme and mountain string music from Local Produce featuring Tryon&squo;s Doug Rostick. The focus will be contra dancing, a fun community dance style that gets the whole room interacting, mixed with a few other old time dances.
